Happy New Year’s everyone!   It’s Emme Hall from Team Courage Gazelles here.  If you are new to Female Racing News, you may need a little background on me.  My team mate, Michele Martineau and I plan to run the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles, a 9 day all female rally through the harsh deserts of Morocco using only traditional navigation.  That’s right.  No GPS, no cell phones, no chase crews.  Our goal is to raise enough money to get us there, plus $15,000 for breast cancer research.

Why breast cancer?  Because Michele is a previvor.  Having been diagnosed with a 40% chance of developing cancer, Michele elected to have a double mastectomy.  And I gotta tell you, if I had to decide between MRIs every 6 months, wondering if I had cancer, and a mastectomy, it wouldn’t take me long to be on that gurney.(...)

For the first time in the 48-year history of the 24 HEURES MOTOAUTIQUES ROUEN an all-female racing team will compete to conquer the River Seine. The worlds best female in-shore pilots including Bimba Sjoholm of Sweden, Marie-Line Otr of France and Canadian Tammy Wolf have come together to form the greatest international all-female racing teams to compete at this event.
This Internationally renowned competition is part of the World Long Distance Championship (www.24heuresrouen.com) held, May 26, 27 and 28, 2012 and includes over three day’s of competition. International media will join over 400,000 spectators, traveling from around the world to watch this historical event and this team.  The team is currently working hard to gather sponsorship and necessary equipment for the event.

I’ve been all over this great big world of ours, but I’d never been to Florida before this past weekend.   What fun it was to meet all the Female Racing News ladies down in Orlando at the Performance Racing Industry trade show.  I talked up Gazelles to anyone who would listen and also talked to some fire suit manufacturers about doing some designs of women’s suits.  It would be great to meld my design and patternmaking skills with racing and get a prototype out there.  Women in off roading face a few more logistical challenges then the men do while out in the desert and I have a few ideas to make solve those problems.

I had a TON of time to kill on the 1000 mile drive home on Sunday so I was able to catch up (via my hands free adapter, of course) with Michele.  She had some wonderful news!  Artist Christopher Swift has joined Team Courage Gazelles for the design of the 2012 Team Courage Gazelles Rallye Aicha des Gazelles truck. Although you may not recognize his name, Christopher’s artwork has impacted the lives of almost every man, woman, and child. Some of his famous works include Avatar, Ironman, Alice in Wonderland, A.I., Jurassic Park, and Terminator, not to mention cult classics Interview with a Vampire, Friday the 13^th and Child’s Play.(...)

Come see Erika Detota and her “I Love Boobies” Rally winning race car on Friday November 18 at Spins Bowl located at Grand Prix New York in Mount Kisco. The brand new bowling ally will host “Strikes Against Cancer Bowl-A-Thon” with fundraising to benefit Support Connection a local women’s cancer organization.

The event starts at 8:00pm with many festivities provided by GPNY. “It will be really fun to go bowling while raising money for such a great organization” says Detota about the fundraiser. Erika is sponsored by GPNY along side Keep-A-Breast.org, a non-profit focused on prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

I walked into the back classroom at REI on Thursday not knowing exactly what to expect.  I was there for my first Fundamental of Map and Compass Reading class, kind of a precursor to the navigation training I will receive for Gazelles.

For those not up to speed, I’ll be competing with Michele Martineau in the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in March 2012, a 9 day all female rally through Morocco.  It’s one of the toughest off road rallies in the world, where participants are not allowed chase crews or GPS.

Wait….what?  No GPS?   Nope.  We Gazelles will navigate using old maps, a compass, and our stunning intellect to get us from one check point to another.  Points are awarded for the shortest distance, not necessarily the fastest time.  Don’t get me wrong though, you certainly can’t dawdle.  To quote a former Gazelle, “…to win, you need to be dead accurate.  To be dead accurate you have to stop and work on your navigation and then drive quickly when you know exactly where you are going.”

But any kind of speed we put down won’t matter if we’re off by 2 degrees, and though I will be the driver, Michele the navigator, we both need to know how to be spot on right. So I found myself  at  REI in a basic class.(...)

They say it’s the journey, not the destination. After 16 years of pursuing my passion, I can honestly say the journey has been amazing and I look forward to continuing to pursue my ultimate dream of one day racing, Formula 1 tunnel boats.

My name is Tammy Wolf and I am a Formula 3 powerboat race driver. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to blog on FRN about my experiences as a professional powerboat race driver. Thank you for taking the time to read my introductory blog, I look forward to updating you on our 2012 season and events.

Growing up in Canada, my father worked at a company called Mercury Marine. Mercury provided motors and factory support for powerboat racers. In the summer, my family traveled to boat races across the country. When we weren’t at races we were up at our cottage with race boats and drivers, my father helped them perfect there boats, motors, props and racing set-ups.

I had a pretty incredible childhood, watching these wonderful athletes and machines compete, even today I am astonished at the beauty and graces of a tunnel boat gliding on top of the water balancing on a cushion of air.

At the age of 18, I started racing in a smaller, slower Formula–V class and through the years progressed up the ranks. Competition was great in Canada and I learned a lot racing. In 2004, I joined friends on a trip to a boat race in the United Stated. It was exciting to see the tough rivalry in Formula 3, boats were fiercely competitive and the series had three times as many racers then the Canadian circuit.

During the fall of 2004, I purchased my first Formula 3 (SST 60) boat, registered as a racing member of that American Power Boat Association (APBA) and prepared to compete in ’05. My first Formula 3 season was unbelievable. I was amazed at all the camaraderie in the pit area and how supportive the competing teams were. At the conclusion of 2005, racers had welcomed me into the series and I was honored to win the Canadian Cup Award for highest-ranking Canadian driver on the circuit.(...)

The last race of the USRC saw many teams struggle with mechanical and equipment
failures this year. The team of Erika Detota and Brian Johnson unfortunately one of
them, suffered a flat tire and a broken axle which subsequently left them unable to
finish the first day of stages. “The new roads were beautiful” says Detota “but the
traditionally run stages in the rally took a beating from the wet fall and were very
rocky” which is where the team suffered their failures. Under super rally rules they
were able to fix their axle and re-entered the race for the last day of racing.

Day 2 was going their way with a top 2 stage time, the team was way ahead of the
competition for the regional race. However with their inability to finish the first day
they were sadly unable to hold onto any chances of keeping the USRC 2 wheel drive
title that Detota won in 2010 with then co-driver Jason Smith. For 2011, Detota
received 3rd place in the championship with 1st going back to previous winners
Mike Reilly and Josh Bethian respectively.(...)
