Savannah Rickli sets a record at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Savannah Rickli, a 16 year old high school senior from Littleton, Colorado, made history on Sunday June 27th, 2010 when she became the youngest finisher in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb during the 88th running of the event. The PPIHC is the second oldest race in the United States; only the Indy 500 has run more races. Rickli was also awarded the honor of being named Rookie of the Race, a tremendous achievement.

Savannah relied on Rebecca Greek as co-driver in their 2003 Mini Cooper S, powered by Mini of Loveland, fabricated and engineered by Built-By-Bones, with race preparation and race support by SCR Performance. The finishing time of 13:58 was good enough for 3rd in the Time Attack 2Wheel Drive class.

Savannah and Rebecca were fortunate to encounter favorable conditions on their run up one of Colorado’s most scenic peaks, and were the crowd favorites, with the cheering often overcoming the exhaust tone of the Mini Cooper S. Savannah has been attending as a child of loyal hill climb workers, parents Neil and Carol, for the last 12 years. She worked in race control in 2008 and 2009. Read More

Mid-Season Review TDI Cup Justine Jackson

Courtesy of LynStJames.com
The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI cup series has so far been the most exciting season since its inaugural year in 2008 and with both rookies and veterans in the mix of the championship chase it has been dubbed the most competitive season thus far.

19 year old Jamaican karter, Justine Jackson was chosen as one of the series’ 25 drivers and was awarded the Project Podium Scholarship to compete in the 2010 season. With no experience in racing cars Justine had a huge learning curve ahead of her as she went into Round 1 at the VIRginia International Raceway finishing 21st in race 1 and 19th in race 2 having been tapped in turn 1 and spun around losing 23 sec and but able to make up the lost time to the back markers. A great learning weekend for Justine having been 14s of the pace in Practice 1 and ended the weekend 2.5s off the fastest lap of the race! In race 2! Read More

Cassey Watson Silverstone

27 June 2010 | Worcestershire driver Cassey Watson reached the heights of sixth in the Trofeo
Abarth 500 GB driver championship, but slipped back three places less than 24 hours later after
her Asetto Corse race car developed a fault to cut short her track-time at Silverstone.
Watson, who’s still yet to turn 19, qualified on the fourth row on the grid at the historic
Northamptonshire bridge grand prix circuit on Saturday (race 9). Yet despite her position, the
Thames driver did well to overcome some initial technical difficulties to claw back three places to
finish fifth, and keep Mardi Gras driver Paul Smith at bay in the leaderboard.
However, Sunday’s race (race 10) proved to be less fruitful for Watson, who was forced to retire
midway through the race after her driver flange failed, coupled with a loss of brakes – the result of
which saw Watson slip back three places in the driver championship.

Vintage Grand Prix honors legendary driver and her favorite car, the Corvette

Alfa Romeos, Bugattis and other members of the sportscar alphabet are the heart of Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, but this year’s event also is focused on what has been called a “racing triangle.”

The classic cars set the tone for the Grand Prix, but this year’s celebration also focuses on the memory of Donna Mae Mims, a legendary driver who pulled on the brake for the final time in October 2009; her favorite car, the Corvette; and the modified muscle cars of Yenko Racing.

Those three elements tie together in a bit of Western Pennsylvania sports car lore, says Dan DelBianco, president of the Grand Prix, which is sponsored by Shop’n Save.

The crusty blonde everyone refers to simply as Donna Mae was drawn into racing through her love of Corvettes and became the first woman to win the Sports Car Club of America racing championship in 1963.

She bought that car at the Yenko dealership in Canonsburg, which will be celebrated by a Yenko Sports Car Reunion that will bring together some of the remanufactured vehicles put together by car dealer and auto modifier Don Yenko.
