RACE REPORT ROTEX SERIES MIDDLE EAST 14TH APRIL / ROTAX SENIOR MAX KARTDROME DUBAI 20TH APRIL.

South African karting racer Fabienne Lanz has had a successful month of April in kart racing in the Middle East. On the 14th of April, she became the first female to stand on the podium in the Rotex Series Middle East. A week later the young South African took a race win in the Rotex Senior Max at Kartdrome in Dubai.

ROTEX SERIES, MIDDLE EAST – 14 APRIL 2012

Fabienne qualified 3rd on a track she had never raced on before, driving a Haase chassis for the first time. Father Peter had cured a misfire in the engine earlier which had helped in the qualifying session.

Heat 1 saw Fabienne drop back as she initially struggled with set up and track issues. She soon fond pace and was able to set the fastest race lap. Heat 2 resulted in a fine 3rd place finish. “I started in 5th place for the final. The kart felt good and I knew I was on the pace to challenge for a win” stated Fabienne.

By the end of lap 1, Fabienne had moved into 2nd place, and by lap 3 of the 15 lap race she took the lead. As she had started on older tyres, Fabienne came under pressure from the 2nd place runner with 4 laps to go.

As Fabienne was a guest driver, she could not score points, and she did not want to jeopardize the outcome of the championship. She relinquished the lead and held on to cross the line in a fine 2nd place, and in doing so became the first female on a Rotex podium in the Middle East.(...)

Fabienne Lanz made a cameo appearance in the final race of the DAMC Karting Championship, and walked away with top honours, as she powered to victory in the Senior Max category at Dubai Kartdrome on Friday (20 April 2012) – also a day when the season’s DAMC champions were crowned.

Lanz who is no stranger to the Kartdrome, although she campaigns mainly in South Africa and Europe, was untouchable on the day in the Senior Max category as she qualified in pole position and then proceeded to win the heat race, the pre-final before romping home to win the final.(...)

Exhilarating, thrilling, and fast paced are words used to describe racing. Racing can also be described as an increasingly expensive hobby. Starting out in the sport is one of the most difficult ventures to take part in. In order to drive in many of the organizations across Ontario you need to have your own equipment, or at least be willing to dish out a considerable amount of money to have someone else do the work. In my opinion this is one of the reasons that the sport seems to have dwindled in past years in combination with the economic downturn throughout North America.

Organizations like the Arrive and Drive program at Mosport International Karting are helping widen the pool of racing talent. Arrive and drive allows you to show up on race day and have a kart ready to go for you. The employees maintain the karts and each racer is given a different kart on every run. You then get to race against others on a 1.5 km road course. All of the damages are covered and thus you wont have to sit out a race due to wrecked equipment. This in turn makes the focus on driving talent and developing essential skills for racing. It is the easiest way for the average person to get out on the track in the most affordable way.

One up and coming talent that has gotten her start in the arrive and drive program is Willow Baberstock. Having been a race track regular at a young age Willow has had the opportunity to watch her Grandfather, Randy Hollingsworth race for years. She has also been a driver in the arrive and drive program at Mosport International Karting for three years. Along the way Willow has picked up over 20 wins, 13 of which came in one season. She began racing at the age of 9. Now at the age of 12 Willow has won her first championship and look to repeat her 2011 success in 2012. Entering her fourth full year of the arrive and Drive Willow plans on making this her last season before making the leap into the mini-stock division at Kawartha Speedway.(...)

RD 1 DUBAI ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

South African karting racer Fabienne Lanz was part of a 5 driver race team that took overall victory at round 1 of the Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship. The 24 Hour event was contested by teams from all over the world with over 100 drivers participating in the grueling event.

Reigning champions Batelco got the defense of their title off to a fine start when they powered over the finish line on Saturday (10th March) to score a hard earned victory in Round 1 of the competitive Championship.

It was not an ideal start for the team from Bahrain as they were forced to the back end of the grid after their kart was found to be underweight during qualifying. This failed to deter them as their first stint driver Alban Varutti proceeded to carve his way through the field and before the hour mark the team led the field.(...)

Caterham Motorsport has appointed 20-year old karting ace, Laura Tillett, to assist with development of the new karting championship it will launch in 2013.

Tillett, 20, was the first British female to compete in the ‘KF1’ World Championship, the karting equivalent of Formula One, following considerable success on the British scene.

The Tillett family is very well-known in the global karting world, as Tillett Racing Seats are the world’s leading supplier of race seats, rib protection and karting accessories.

Aspiring racer Laura joined Caterham last week and will spearhead the Caterham kart series project, announced at last month’s AutoSport International show in Birmingham.(...)

New South Wales (Tenambit, NSW) kart racer Caitlin Wood flew the Australian flag high during a two-day shootout in Switzerland earlier this week.

Wood lined up against eight aspiring female kart racers from across the globe in the shootout with the winner receiving a funded drive in the 2011 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy courtesy CIK-FIA and Women & Motor Sport Commission.

The youngsters, all 15 years of age or younger, were put through their paces both physically and mentally, taking part in activities designed to assess their movement, agility and reflexes, the reaction of their bodies to stress, as well as their knowledge of karting history and sporting regulations. On the second day the young karters took to the wheel at the Scientrier circuit to demonstrate their speed and racing ability.

The successful driver was voted by a panel – which among others included Commission President and former vice FIA World Rally Champion Michèle Mouton, 1986 Karting Champion of Europe and double World Champion in the FIA World Touring Car Championship Yvan Muller, former European Kart Champion Cathy Muller, and Vincent Caro, Executive Secretary of the CIK-FIA.(...)

Wittier, CA (March 16, 2011) – This past weekend Raquel Martinez and Martinez Racing headed east for the second round of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup. The series was making its debut at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. The track lacked grip, but the weather was perfect all weekend long and the team was ready for competition.

One week prior to the WKA National, Raquel raced in the opening Cal State race at CalSpeed making her senior debut in the PRD category. The weekend got off to a rough start with a mechanical problem causing her not to be able to set a time during qualifying. In the prefinal Raquel went from twentieth position to finish fourth in the fourteen-lap prefinal setting fast time on the way. The final became a three kart breakaway with Raquel leading a good portion of the race. Raquel moved from third to second with a great pass on the final lap.

KENT, Wash. (March 8, 2011) — Jessica Dana continued her perfect run in the Stars of PGP Kart Fall-Winter Series finale on Sunday at PGP Motorsports Park, winning her third straight TaG Senior main event and breaking her own track record.

The 16-year-old from Tumwater, Wash., finished first overall in the combined TaG/Rotax Final as well as winning the Pre-Final race on Sunday — making her three-for-three in that category as well — and just missed earning a third straight pole after a setup change prior to qualifying resulted in a slower than expected run.

The situation didn’t look promising for a three-peat on Saturday, as Jessica and her team struggled with mechanical and setup issues during practice. They worked late into the night to have Jessica’s No. 12 Arrow X9 kart ready for raceday, and their hard work paid off. During the Pre-Final Jessica broke PGP’s TaG Senior record on the counter-clockwise track configuration with a lap of 1 minute, 01.789 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:01.976 she set making her TaG Senior debut in January.(...)

KENT, Wash. (Feb. 9, 2011) — Smart adjustments by her crew during preliminary rounds and a phenomenal drive in the final landed Jessica Dana on the top step of the podium for the second straight event during Stars of PGP Kart Fall-Winter Series action on Sunday, Feb. 6 at PGP Motorsports Park.

Racing on a mostly wet track and facing a challenge from Kyle Byers on her outside, Jessica shot into the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green flag for the TaG Senior class final event. Jessica began to pull away from the field by the fourth corner and had built up a comfortable lead when Byers dropped out of the race on Lap 4 with mechanical problems.

Unpressured from behind, the 16-year-old from Tumwater, Wash., continued to push in her Arrow X9 kart, laying down fast lap times in just her second race in wet conditions. About the midpoint of the race, however, a drier line began to form while at the same time Jessica and her crew noticed the handling of her kart was rapidly going away.

Unsure of what had happened, the crew signaled Jessica to stop pushing and manage her equipment to finish the race. Jessica nodded and wrapped up the win without incident, crossing the finish line 13.5 seconds ahead of second place while her crew sweated through every corner.(...)
