Competitors on the Track, Mother and Daughter Off

Jody Folice and Ashley Caldwell

Mother and daughter quality time comes in many forms. For Jody Folice and Ashley Caldwell, they spend their time at the track. Racing is in their blood, and nothing is going to hinder them from continuing this family tradition at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Folice grew up as one of three girls in the Folice family, but she was the only one to follow her dad’s path into racing. With three World Karting Association titles and two International Karting Federation championships under her belt, Folice has made her name in the karting world and is now stepping back into Legend Cars, racing on Tuesday nights alongside her daughter.

Just like Folice, 14-year-old Caldwell grew up at the race track and wanted to follow her parent’s footsteps into the world of motorsports.

“My mom always took me to the race track when I was little, and we went to a few Summer Shootout races before I started racing,” said Caldwell. “I told my mom that I wanted to race those cars and she said she would see what she could do.”

The mother-daughter duo may not race against each other in the same division, Folice races in the Security Force Legend Car Masters division, while Caldwell races in the Bandolero Outlaws, but they make sure to display their best racing skills whenever possible. Folice wants to make sure her competitors and her daughter know she still has what it takes to race with the best of them.

“I’m a goofball off the track, but when it comes to racing, I take it very seriously,” Folice said. “Showing her [Caldwell] that I know what I’m talking about makes all the difference.”

Caldwell recognizes her mother’s experience and uses it as a driving force in her own racing career.

“Whenever I race her in anything, it makes me want to do better so I can show her that I am good and that I have potential,” said Caldwell.

This is the first year Folice won’t be helping with Caldwell’s car for the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series, taking their competitive natures to the next level. Not only will the two be racing for wins in their respected divisions, but for bragging rights about who the best driver is, mother or daughter.

Watch Caldwell in her No. 9 Josh Williams Motorsports Bandolero take on the field in the Outlaw division while her mom shows the competitors how it’s done with her No.4 Weatherman Motorsports Speedway Legend Car in the Security Force Legend Car Masters division.

The 20th annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series continues Tuesday, June 25, with Media Mayhem school bus racing. In addition to the regular racing divisions, fans can see local TV and radio personalities go head-to-head in 13-ton school buses for a spectacular school bus slobberknocker.

Tickets for the Summer Shootout Series are $7 for adults and are available in advance at the speedway ticket office or at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Kids 13 and under get in free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action starting at 5:10 p.m. Opening ceremonies are at 6:45 p.m., and feature races are scheduled to conclude by approximately 10 p.m.

Racing will be televised on the Fox Sports South network, with a recap show airing each Monday following the event at 6 p.m. and a re-air the following Saturday. Fans should check their local listings for more information.
