Life on the dirt, Shelby Frye.

My name is Shelby Frye; I have been racing go karts in Phoenix, Arizona for just over eight years now! Deciding to step up, my dad and I bought a  “Modlite” dirt car an 02 Pro chassis. They raced on 3/8’s mile dirt ovals, and almost every weekend at Canyon Speedway Park and ET Moto Park. Having no sponsors is more than difficult in today’s economy; however we have still managed to keep the car out on the track every Saturday night.

Growing up in Michigan, my father (Jack) raced Modifieds, although I was too young to really understand it. As time progressed I grew much more found of my hot wheels, and less with my Barbies. To this day I’m a senior in high school and a straight A student. Racing has become a major part of my life. I encourage any girls that have a passion for racing, no matter what type, to rise above in a sport that has been so man based for so long. In go karts at AKA, Arizona Karting Association, I won rookie of the year, a State Championship, and a Track Championship. I have also won a nationwide event twice known as the Holiday Classic.

With the Modlites, there are only two female racers including myself. On a regular Saturday night we have anywhere from 24 to 30 cars. In my first year I won three heat races, had three top 5’s and countless top 10’s. Going into the last night I was leading rookie of the year. Which I led since the season opener by over 20 points. However I had car trouble and they made that night a double points night. I lost rookie of the year by two track positions. In the 2011 season, I was the only Modlite to start and finish every green flag lap. (Hot laps, heat races, and main events)

As this season stars, on March 24th 2012, I hope to pick up some sponsors and progress with this passion. I also hope to upgrade my equipment, since running a ten year old car is hard to compete with against the  new ones. I also have the older motor, a 02 Suzuki GSXR 1000 that puts out about 160 hp compared to the new cars that are running the 08 motors; they put out approximately 185 hp. Our cars are weighted; we all have to weigh 1240 pounds with the driver included.

My ultimate goal is to never stop racing. My dream is to race sprint cars with the World of Outlaws.
