Ron Sutton’s Winner Circle Shootout Day: 2

Rain Rain go away!

Today was the on track driver training for the shootout. As I thought, I was in the first group, which wasn’t bad at all because I was thankful enough to run while the track was still dry! The weather man predicted that the rain would start to come around 4:00 and they were right! The morning was very chilly, however my suit made me a lot warmer. We had a short meeting about how the day was going to run and then we split up into groups (modifieds and midgets) for a track walk. We then learned how to operate the cars and took one lap around the pits to get used to the hand clutch. I thought it was pretty easy, it’s different, but easy. I started my session around 11:45 and ended around 2:30. We had five separate sessions, each twenty laps long. Each of the individual sessions were to progress your understanding in the car control, line and to show overall “what you got”. I was ready to go! There was some miscommunication which made me a little shaky and tense, finally I took a step back and relaxed and drove my line, getting quicker and quicker each session. We had to make a few adjustments to the car due to mechanical issues, but the Ron Sutton team knows how these cars work and with that knowledge, got the car fixed and sent me right back out again. After all of my sessions I took a break to get some lunch and to watch the other drivers. The weather started to cave in and started pouring, The drivers were pulled off the track, loaded the pit carts and cars up and locked the trailer. Tomorrow the rest of the drivers will be finishing, if the weather holds up.

I went back to the hotel and I was exhausted, my dad passed out right away..here came the snoring and I was set on capturing his snoring on video, since he says he doesn’t. However, each time I would press the “record” button he would always stop, then whenever I would end the recording, he’d start right back up again. It was very annoying! Therefore, I just ended that and took a short nap until dinner time. After dinner I went to the indoor kart track near the hotel. The track is called RPM, Probably one of the coolest indoor facilities I’ve ever been to. I met up with drivers which are already in the program, they were driver coaches for todays event. These drivers were, Joey Licata, Bobby Runyan and Ricky Bowers, all very talented. It was nice being able to talk to them and better yet to race against them! Out of the four of us Joey came in first, me second, Ricky third and Bobby fourth due to a Disqualification. Those indoor track flaggers don’t like when us real racers come in, were “too rough”. Racing with them made me see how the Ron Sutton program is a big giant family, everyone is fun to be around, and are great people to talk to, they have the best stories as well.

Tomorrow I will most likely go to the track to watch the rest of the drivers, to support them, they waited for me so I will wait for them. I had an eventful weekend, but I am ready to get home and sleep in my own bed.

My name is Molly Helmuth. I am sixteen years old and a Junior at Roosevelt High School in Seattle, Washington. Ever since I was a little girl, racing has always been something I wanted to be a part of because I was at the track watching my uncle race. At the age of eleven I started to compete in the NW IKF series for go-karting. Once I slipped the helmet on and pressed the accelerator, I was hooked. After three years of competing in the Junior Rotax division, I moved into a full sized vehicle, a VW Corrado. Racing in the Mini-stock division at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington, I became the first fifteen year old female to be announced "Rookie of the Year". In 2010 I was invited to attend the first phase of the Lyn St. James Academy and the Ron Sutton Winners Circle Shootout. In 2011, crew chief Roger Habich and mechanic Aaron Hoskin hopped onto the Molly Helmuth Racing team, building me a competitive Mustang for the Mini-stock division. Throughout the season I also managed to fit in some races in the Pro4Truck Alliance group, placing top three and top five each time I went out. After a good season of training and getting to know more about the Mustang, my crew and even myself as a driver, I finished my last race of the season in a Super Late Model. I was enthusiastically announced as the youngest female driver ever to run a Super Late Model at the Evergreen Speedway. That night I was fortunate to be able to race all three of my vehicles in the last race of the season. In 2012 I will be racing the Late Model at Evergreen Speedway, but in the meantime, I am paving the way for other opportunities.
