New Blogger Amy Ott Starts 2012 Off Right!

Hey everyone! This is my first blog with Female Racing News and I couldn’t be any more excited to share my racing experiences and keep you up to date with my racing career. Before I get into results from my first race, let me give you a little background on how I first got started in racing.

I started racing quarter midgets when I was just six years old at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland. I only raced a few races until I didn’t want to do it anymore because I was really slow.

In 2003 when I was just nine years old, my dad bought me a go-kart and I began racing at Hunterstown Speedway, in Pennsylvania. To my surprise, I really liked racing the karts! I had a lot of fun in them and finished off my first season with a few top five finishes. In 2006, I won my first points championship and became the first female to win a championship in the track’s history. Over my three year go-kart racing career, I had picked up about 25 feature wins.

In 2008, I was about 14 when I strapped into the seat of a 358 sprint car. My first race was at Trailway Speedway, and I placed in the top ten. That year I had only got to race about four races, so I still had a lot of learning to do. In 2009, I had a bigger racing schedule, as I then competed at both Lincoln and Williams Grove Speedways. I was pretty consistent that year, and learned a lot while picking up multiple heat race wins as well as placing in the top five a few times.

Currently, I only compete at Williams Grove at their regular weekly 358 shows. Due to lack of help, I was forced to pick one track to race at for the year and I chose Williams Grove.

Now that you have some background on how I got started in racing, I’ll get into how I did this past weekend!

At Williams Grove for the season opener, I drew pill number 22, which started me third in the first heat. After falling back to 5th, I was able to race my way back up into the top four which allowed me to redraw for my starting position in the feature. I drew number four for the feature, and that’s where I started. After battling a loose car the whole race and making a few mistakes, I ended up 8th. I ran a fairly decent race; I couldn’t get my car to stick to the bottom of the corners so I tried moving to the top and caught the cars in front of me, but by that time the race was just about over.

My next race is next Friday (April 6) again at Williams Grove, and I’m really excited to get back behind the wheel! Stay tuned for my updates from next week. :)
