Dawn Boyd Race Recap

Dawn Boyd from Andover (UK) reports her car “Max” has been given a whole new outfit over the winter.. he’s been completely re-shelled and has a new cage, plus a new jacket!  – with thanks to JMS Motorsport for all their hard work.

Dawn raced for the first time in 2011 in April at the recently refurbished Donington Park. Giving “Max2″ a trial run in the V.A.G races on the Saturday, she had to fight with a damaged rear brake but brought Max home for 3rd in class. It was then a race against time to get the brakes fixed for race 2 and JMS managed it with 10 minutes to spare. It was now raining but Dawn battled the weather and came home 2nd in class.

The Sunday saw the first race of the year for the Golf Gti Championship. With several new people on the full grid of 35, the 8valve cars were mixed among the pack. Thankfully today was dry and saw some excellent racing. Thoroughly enjoying the re-modelled Donington Park Dawn had a close fight and finished 4th in race 1. Race 2 was an even closer battle and she finished 3rd. The trophy cabinet is filling up already!

Brands Hatch was the venue for round 2. After completely replacing the brakes since the last round, Dawn “trialed” Max in the V.A.G races again. Racing with so many different classes/speeds of car was always going to be a challenge but there was some “issues” to overcome as slower cars of other classes un-necessarily fought for position, and Dawn had to fight to stay with others in her class.  After 2 exhausting battles she managed to finish 3rd in both races.

The Sunday brought the Golf Gti Championship back out for the sunshine and round 2. Dawn didn’t qualify well and was a bit disappointed, but that didn’t last too long as she had a great start in race 1. As the pack spread out she could see places 1-3 ahead of her and raced hard for several laps slowly catching, with 16v cars all around her. Thinking that the best she could do was 4th, suddenly the car in 2nd lost control and gifted her 3rd place. “A bit of luck is always welcome! sorry Andy! ”

Race 2, Dawn had to start way down again thanks to bad quali, but by Paddock Hill she was right in the pack, but there was a spinner and the pack bunched. Into Druids and another incident saw the 8v leader hit, resulting in the safety car, he recovered but way down the order. The restart caught the novices by surprise and the whole field were spread out single file. Max’s clutch was slipping and losing power, but Dawn had a great tussle with 4th place and slip streamed her way passed; then 3rd place was in sight, with a little assistance from spinners rejoining ahead she found her way through to 2nd! 5 laps from the end Dawn was hit at Graham Hill bend sending her sliding and hit again but she recovered well without losing a place! 3 laps later the fast recovering 8v leader was back on her tail but finally the flag dropped and she crossed the line in 2nd place by only 0.33 of a second from 3rd!.  Dawn’s best championship result ever!.

With thanks to JMS Motorsport we look forward to the next round at Cadwell Park.
