RD 1 DUBAI ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

South African karting racer Fabienne Lanz was part of a 5 driver race team that took overall victory at round 1 of the Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship. The 24 Hour event was contested by teams from all over the world with over 100 drivers participating in the grueling event.

Reigning champions Batelco got the defense of their title off to a fine start when they powered over the finish line on Saturday (10th March) to score a hard earned victory in Round 1 of the competitive Championship.

It was not an ideal start for the team from Bahrain as they were forced to the back end of the grid after their kart was found to be underweight during qualifying. This failed to deter them as their first stint driver Alban Varutti proceeded to carve his way through the field and before the hour mark the team led the field.

The Batelco team spent much of Friday leading with Timeless Events Racing, Dubai Falcons, Rotax Masters, DHL Express Russia, UAE Arrow Racing all chasing hard and constantly in touch with the leaders. Shortly after midnight there was a big shake up in the standings as the ‘Fat Laps’ came in to play, awarding teams with heavier drivers extra laps, this relegated Batelco to fourth place in the standings.

The winning team driver line-up consisted of Mohammad Mattar, Alban Varutti, Ramez Azzam, Oliver Rowland (McLaren Autosport BRDC Award Winner) and South African lady racer Fabienne Lanz. The team completed 1160 laps in the 24 hours also setting the fastest lap of the race.

Round 2 of the 2012 Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship takes place on 11 and 12 May 2012.
