Andover’s girl racer, Dawn Boyd, was at her “local” last weekend. Thruxton was the host to its first

Golf Gti Racing event.

Dawn took part in two races, her championship race was later in the day but first she was in the

V.A.G Trophy cup, an open race to all VW Audi Group cars including some very fast Seats. Good

weather was welcomed by all 28 racers as they swarmed round the fastest circuit in the country,

as qualifying got underway. Several golfs used this race to learn the circuit at race speed and Dawn

qualified well, 4th in her class.

With very little down time Dawn was back on circuit to qualify for the Golf Gti Championship.

Dawn races an 8valve Golf Gti Mk2, amongst the faster 16valve cars, generally 8v are slower and the

fast circuit spread the cars out. Dawn qualified 4th in her class and 17th overall.

Dawn Boyd from Andover (UK) reports her car “Max” has been given a whole new outfit over the winter.. he’s been completely re-shelled and has a new cage, plus a new jacket! – with thanks to JMS Motorsport for all their hard work.

Dawn raced for the first time in 2011 in April at the recently refurbished Donington Park. Giving “Max2″ a trial run in the V.A.G races on the Saturday, she had to fight with a damaged rear brake but brought Max home for 3rd in class. It was then a race against time to get the brakes fixed for race 2 and JMS managed it with 10 minutes to spare. It was now raining but Dawn battled the weather and came home 2nd in class.

The Sunday saw the first race of the year for the Golf Gti Championship. With several new people on the full grid of 35, the 8valve cars were mixed among the pack. Thankfully today was dry and saw some excellent racing. Thoroughly enjoying the re-modelled Donington Park Dawn had a close fight and finished 4th in race 1. Race 2 was an even closer battle and she finished 3rd. The trophy cabinet is filling up already!

The season closed with a bang for Andover’s girl motor racer Dawn Boyd last weekend.

With the points in the championship table so close there was still all to play for, in the last two races of the year at Snetterton. Dawn booked in to do the championship double races and also entered the VAG mixed class race again and on a drying track she qualified first in her class in the VAG race and fourth in the golf races. The VAG race was very entertaining and with so many different types and speeds of cars on circuit there was always something going on. Dawn battled for the class lead with the championship winner and being careful not to make a mistake before the golf race later on, she settled for second in class and podium number one.

The golf race and hour later was hectic with close and clean battling. Snetterton’s long straights help slipstreaming and Dawn traded places many times getting ahead of her main 2010 rival. With the golfs mixing both 16valve and 8valve cars together there were two class races going on at the same time, and although the overall result counts, points were gained for the class result. On the very last corner a 16v car slid sideways straight into the back of Dawn’s car, which resulted in a broken exhaust and damaged shell but she brought it home in third place and podium number two. An event unheard of for her in four years of racing.(...)
Read the rest of Trophy treble for Dawn Boyd

Andover’s girl racer Dawn Boyd was at the prestigious Silverstone Grand Prix circuit recently. She had entered two races, the usual Championship Golf race plus an additional VAG race (VW Audi Seat mixture). Both qualified together, filling the circuit with 49 cars. In horrendous monsoon-like weather many spun off into gravel traps, and qualifying was brought to a halt after only a few laps.

This helped Dawn as her windscreen wiper had stopped working and after five minutes delay and some running repairs, they were back on circuit. With time for only one fast lap, it was all or nothing and she qualified fourth in class.

With the heavy rain still falling the first race got underway and she made a good start but as the cars were tightly packed it was very difficult to see through the spray. Several spun and the pack slowly spread out but it was very difficult to control the car in the puddles and a few laps in she made her maiden spin. Going very slowly through a corner the rear slid away and she over corrected the other way onto the track, but got going again and came over the line first in class.(...)
Read the rest of Dawn Boyd tames sodden Silverstone

Andover girl motor racer Dawn Boyd was back on track at Castle Combe recently but this time it was for a Golf Gti Championship round.

Her car “Max” was all spruced up after the incidents at Brands Hatch and with a smart new bumper and headlights it was back to business.

The recent race action at Combe had really helped for experience and Dawn was quickly on the pace in qualifying and was placed third in class on the grid for her only race of the day. With a time of 1.24.778 she was only 0.93 of a second behind the leader and only 0.32 behind second place.

The Motor Racing season has finally begun and Andover racer Dawn Boyd was on track at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

The official event program had Dawn’s photograph and a mention as an 8valve racer to watch out for, would this prove to be a good omen?

The Golf Gti Racing Championship has joined the MSVR package and will join some great high profile races this season, including the Britcar 24 hour races at Silverstone.

Sunday was a packed day with 19 races, and with the threat of rain the organisers tried to pull all races forward where ever possible to make the most of the dry weather; all eyes were on the clouds.

Dawn’s Golf’s were on track at 10.30 for qualifying. This was the first time the car had been raced since a full engine replacement over the winter, and JMS Motorsport had done a great job. Dawn qualified 4th in class in amongst a pack of faster 16valve cars.

Race 1 wasn’t until 3pm. The weather was still dry and Dawn made a good start but the pack bunched up at Paddock Hill and she lost a place, with no contact the capacity grid of 32 Mk2 Golf’s streamed round the track, an awesome spectacle. The new engine was performing superbly and Dawn had a great race overtaking and dicing with both classes.

On the 8th and 9th of December 2007 saw the 2nd London Motorsport show take place at the ExCel centre in Docklands. Girlracer had an impressive stand featuring many of the top female drivers in British Motorsport. There was the MG belonging to the most successful woman to race in the BTCC, Fiona Leggate, soon to be British GT driver, Anna Walewska with her Dodge Viper, Cassey Watson, an upcoming driver in the Ginetta Junior championship and Dawn Boyd from the Uk Mini Challenge Championship.

Also present were the 2006 Silverstone rally school Ladyquest winner, Beck Kirvan, and VW racer Karen Andrews and Autograss racer Michaela Bevans. It wasn’t just four wheeled Motorsport that was represented as the impressive Motorcycle racer Sam Burnam had her bike on the stand. Even Motorsport on the water was covered with National and European Championship winning Power Boat racer Sarah Donohue sharing her experiences, which even include Stunt driving for a James Bond Movie

The stand formed part of a women in Motorsport display designed to encourage potential upcoming female racing drivers to take an interest in the sport. The other purpose of the stand was to launch the Brand new Girlracer product GR1, a Fragance designed to make both your car and house smell amazing!

The stand was the busiest in the whole show with all the drivers talking to huge numbers of people throughout the two days, hopefully encouraging many more women to enter what has until recently, been a male dominated sport. The entire Girlracer range of products was on display throughout the stand and proved to be very popular with visitors.

Director Gary Wood declared the event to be a huge success, “It’s been a fantastic event, but very tiring!” he said after the show.

The next big Motorsport show is the annual Autosport event at the NEC in January where there should be another Girlracer stand. We hope to see you there!
