Sarah Fisher and Mario Andretti were among the participants on the Indy 500 Centennial Tour — on a 10-day goodwill trip to Europe and the Middle East with the goal of boosting the morale of more than 10,000 servicemen and women. The team also included fellow Indianapolis 500 winners Johnny Rutherford and Al Unser Jr., plus Indy 500 veterans Davey Hamilton, Larry Foyt and Firestone Indy Lights race winner Martin Plowman.

Sarah’s diary: They told me at the beginning, that I would be sad to go home even though I would miss my spouse, family and friends. They were right. The past 10 days have been the most incredible experience I have been a part of. To say the least, I will be forever grateful for our military and their dedication to keeping us safe. Three troops were in the hallway at the airport as I was making my way to the Indianapolis gate, and I couldn’t help notice the difference in my gratefulness toward them just seeing them on their way. Yes, this trip has changed my life.

Mario Andretti said during the whole tour that being in the military was the noblest profession. I couldn’t agree more.

The impact of being a part of the Indianapolis 500 Centennial Tour in the Middle East, has made a massive difference in the respect and thankfulness for the men and women who serve on behalf of our country. You really think you get it, know what lies ahead for them, but when you see it up close and personal it delivers a new dimension of understanding.(...)
Read the rest of Sarah Fisher Reflects on Goodwill Tour

Day 3 (so tired!!!)

We got up so early — I believe it was 1 a.m. when we left the Ramstein Inn. So, I was eager to get on the KC135 (our plane) to take a long nap. Its wings fold up (storage on a carrier is minimum), and passengers sit race-car style with four point harnesses. We had to don Craniums (soft-shell helmets) and face masks (similar to ski masks). Sleeping upright has never been a strong point of mine, but you can imagine after taking sporadic three-hour naps that I was more than ready to take a shot at it! So, on with the sleep mask (I’m sure there are some funny pictures out there), and on to Bahrain to drop the Two Seater and the Indy Experience team, then transfer on to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

The landing part was not as scary as I thought it would be. When they lowered the back door, it’s like we were instantly in the movie “Top Gun.” Yeah, those guys are real. (...)
Read the rest of IndyCar owner Sarah Fisher visits troops

INDIANAPOLIS – Without officially calling it a retirement, Izod IndyCar Series owner/driver Sarah Fisher announced Monday that she will step out of the car in 2011 to focus on her role as team principal of Sarah Fisher Racing.

Fisher broke the news at a luncheon at SFR’s Indianapolis headquarters, where she also announced that Ed Carpenter will drive the No. 67 Dollar General-sponsored car in at least nine IndyCar races during the upcoming season.

“I’m pretty much retiring,” Fisher was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. “I want to start a family.”

Fisher, 30, was voted the IndyCar Series’ “Most Popular Driver” three times, and was Indy car racing’s most successful female driver prior to the arrival in the series of Danica Patrick. Her IndyCar career highlights include pole position at Kentucky Speedway in 2002 and a pair of podium finishes.

The Ohio native formed SFR in 2008 and has competed on a part-time basis the last three years, generally on oval tracks.

“Being both an owner and a driver is both time consuming on both sides,” Fisher stated. “I really want to see this team move forward and to have one driver who does all the races — ovals and road courses. It’s just very hard to do both.”(...)
Read the rest of Sarah Fisher to focus on ownership

Last night, Sarah Fisher, driver for the IZOD IndyCar Series and owner of the Sarah Fisher Racing Team received the “Risk Taker” leading light award from Women and Hi Tech in Indianapolis. The Leading Light Award ceremony honored women from Indiana with achievements in science, education, and technology.

Fisher was very deserving of the “Risk Taker” award; she took a large leap for women in the field of auto sports when she began her own team- Sarah Fisher Racing in 2008. This season shows her team has done very well. They secured a sponsor, Dollar General, placed 26 out of 41 in the IZOD IndyCar Series and has an incredible fan following!
Question: When you started racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series 11 years ago, did you think you’d be here racing as an owner/driver?

SARAH FISHER: There have been a lot of ups and downs in my career, and I definitely didn’t see myself here. I’ve had to rebound to where I am, which is fantastic. To own my own team, own my own cars and work with my own people is something I’m most proud of now.

Question: You’re not running the full schedule and Sara Fisher Racing will run selected events for the rest of the year.
In a sport that continues to grow, auto racing also has seen an increase in female drivers. But the sport has yet to see a woman break into the top-tier NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on a regular basis.

While Danica Patrick, perhaps the most well-known of the female drivers, has run in three Nationwide Series this year — at Daytona, Fontana, Calif., and Las Vegas — most women are making their mark in the IndyCar Series and the National Hot Rod Association. That could be about to change.(...)
Read the rest of When Will Women Break into Sprint Cup?

Danica Patrick could do no wrong in her 2005 debut in the Indianapolis 500.

Her every lap was chronicled as if it bore the historical significance of a lunar landing. And when she seized the lead with 10 laps to go, the 300,000 fans in the stands at Indianapolis Motor Speedway went wild.

Though Patrick finished fourth, forced to conserve fuel in order to complete the distance, it seemed at that moment that the 23-year-old rookie was poised to revive lagging interest in IndyCar racing and redefine what was possible for female athletes.

This past weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Patrick was roundly booed — and justifiably so — after blaming a poor qualifying result on her mechanics.

“It’s not my fault,” Patrick said over the public-address system after her 224.217-mph effort landed her 23rd in the 33-car field, barely locking in one of the 24 starting spots awarded the first day of a new two-day qualifying format.

Patrick wasn’t the day’s fastest woman, either, outperformed by two rookies: Ana Beatriz of Brazil, who’ll line up 21st (224.243 mph) in Sunday’s 94th running of the Indianapolis 500, and Simona de Silvestro of Switzerland, who’ll start 22nd (224.228 mph).(...)
Read the rest of Four women, set to contend in 2010 Indianapolis 500, none for Coca Cola 600

IndyCar Series driver and owner of Sarah Fisher Racing, Sarah Fisher, was awarded the Spirit of Leadership award today by the Women’s Automotive Association International (WAAI). The award was presented in conjunction with the National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“To follow in the footsteps of the many women who have received this award before me, I’m honored to have been thought of for this prestigious award,” said Fisher, who announced on January 13th that she would return to the IndyCar Series in 2009 with backing from Dollar General. “For me, being an active part of my community and lending a helping hand has been a dedication for me in my life thus far. I’m very happy I was able to accept this award in person today thanks to AAA Auto Insurance and to also meet this group of female influencers in the automotive industry. Thank you very much.”

Decades after Shirley Muldowney knocked down the gender barrier at the top levels of drag racing, success by women in motor sports is still largely hit or miss. But those who have followed the pioneers are now giving rise to more young drivers, and that next generation will one day be Patrick’s legacy and that of today’s other female racers.
