Drag Racing FRN Driver Diary — 05 May 2011

Kunmadaras in Hungary, FIA Exhibition

Over the last two weeks the Robinson Race Car team have had very little time to relax. Immediately after our first meeting at Santa Pod, England, My Dad, Brother Luke and a long time family friend Andrew Wright started driving to Hungary. All in all the trip is around 1200 miles each way I believe so leaving on the Tuesday they finally got there and parked up on Thursday night.

For myself, my Mum and my boyfriend Ryan we jet setted our way out on Friday morning on a Wizz Air flight from Luton into Budapest. Our trip started at a reasonable time and because the Royal Wedding was taking place the roads were clear.

Hungary is very different to other countries we have been to race in, but it’s always nice to go to different countries and with our racing I have been very fortunate to be able to do that.

Our drive from Budapest to Kunmadaras was about two hours, we arrived in the evening and joined the rest of my family who were still doing a few little jobs on the car to get it ready for the next day. The schedule for the weekend was 2 runs on each day before heading back to go home Sunday night.

On the Saturday morning the sun was shining brightly and crowds started coming in. This event is a bike only event so we were very honoured to have been invited along with 2 only other Pro Mods, 2 Top Fuel dragsters and 2 Top Methanol dragsters to perform exhibition passes for the crowd – There are so many great cars in Europe so to be asked is really flattering for the team.

Because we had been invited the year before, we already knew the track was slippery and we were not going to be able to run our best on it. The track team are working exceptionally hard to get it better, and it is improving but its not there quite yet.

With this in mind, Luke and Dad make some key changes with the car and the set up to allow us to be able to perform the best we could, after all we wanted to give the crowd the best show possible!

Dad did an awesome burnout, it went on and on and on for ages – In competition he usually is quite modest with his burnouts but he really wanted to please the crowd here so he decided to make it last longer. The commentator was going mad, he was so enthusiastic and even though I didn’t have a clue what he was saying I’m pretty sure he enjoyed watching it too!

Our run was as good as we could do in the circumstances – Dad said it’s a weird feeling racing on the track and it almost feels like racing on ice so he launched cautiously and drove it down as fast but as safely as he could.

On the way back we towed back past the grandstands and the crowd were simply amazing, they were cheering us so much it makes me feel very proud to have been part of that!

Later on that day just before our 2nd run the rain started to fall so we were told to go back to our pits and unfortunately were not able to do our second scheduled pass that day.

On the Sunday we completed two more passes much the same as the first, massive burnouts and runs as quickly and safely as we could, over the weekend we achieved a best of 7.9 seconds which is obviously a lot slower than our usual but the crowd were impressed and lots of spectators came to look at the car, take photos and even buy some souvenir broken parts from previous meetings.

Racing exhibition is very different to what we’re used to, and it really shows when speaking to my Dad. All over the weekend he kept saying about launching it harder or trying different things to go faster, and even during these runs he still had to beat everyone he was paired up against on the lights – Obviously you can take Dad out of the race but not the racer out of Dad!

I’d like to thank, on behalf of the team the spectators and track officials at Kunmadaras for inviting us to come again and for being so welcoming, we had a lovely time and look forward to coming back in the future. I would also like to thank Andrew Wright for coming along and helping out the team – its difficult with the crew to balance racing and they’re work commitments. Sometimes the holiday allowance just doesn’t cover it.

And last but definitely not least to our regular crew, we missed having you there but the car and engine were well looked after as promised as we’re in a great position for the Main Event (our first FIA meeting of the year at the end of May!)

Next weekend we will be working on the car to prepare for this meeting so I’ll be back with more news soon.

 Thanks for reading!
