With snow and ice lingering in the Forest of Dean, crews were faced with some of the most demanding conditions in British rallying on the opening round of the Pirelli Welsh National Rally Championship, the Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally.
Sara Williams, fresh from a confidence boosting shakedown and partnered by new co-driver Andrew Sankey, took her KLARIUS Group backed Subaru Impreza N12b to the Chepstow based event with high hopes of starting her Welsh National Rally Championship campaign with a bang but tricky conditions meant a cautious and measured approach was needed.
A bold tyre choice was made before the first stage to run a winter Pirelli road tyre on the polished ice/gravel surface. With traction a big issue for all crews it was simply a case of keeping the car pointing in the right direction and ensuring they got to the end of the event.
“It was probably the most difficult event I’ve ever competed on” said Sara. “The tyre choice was difficult as everything was a compromise – we tried both a road tyre and a full snow tyre but span and overshot junctions on both – there was no winning”.
Sara gradually climbed her way up the leaderboard throughout the day, taking 35th overall and 8th in class in treacherous conditions.
“I was really happy to get to the end. The only damage we sustained was losing the rear bumper when we span, plus we picked up some good points in both the Welsh National Championship and REIS-Get Connected BTRDA Rally Series.
“We’re heading to the Mid Wales next – that’s one of my favourite events of the year. I hope the weather is better for us and we’ll go all out in that one.”
Sara is supported in her 2012 rally campaign by KLARIUS Group, Woodford Trailers, Brecon Motors, Brecon Car Rental, Ian Jones Tyres and Millers Oils. The car is prepared and run by Subaru expert Geoff Jones Motorsport.
